In order to support disadvantaged households across the country, the Vietnam National Roofsheet Association and the Vietnamese Heart Fund continue to hold a fieldtrip to Truc village, Yen Phuc commune, Y Yen district, Nam Dinh province on June 05, 2020. Here, we have directly witnessed the miserable circumstance of Ms. Vu Thi Van, a over 60-year-old woman is suffering from a mental illness.
According to local people in the neighborhood, Ms. Van spent most of her life in solitude without a husband and children due to the cognitive disabilities. Previously, she has adopted a daughter but the little girl also exhibits adnormal behaviours and always left home to wander around.
Mr. Vu Ngoc Uon – the Head of Yen Phuc village, Yen Phuc commune shared: Ms. Van is a single mom but she and her daughter are suffering from a mental illness. Therefore, there is no way for them to overcome difficulties in spite of poor life.
In addition to her 15-year-old daughter, Ms. Van also has 03 sisiters. However, they have already had their own families so there is no way to take care of her thoroughly. It is told that collecting rubbish is the only way for Ms. Van to earn a living. Therefore, daily nutrient-deficient meals with rice and water are familiar. Fortunately, she is sometimes given tofu or meals by local warm-hearted neighbors.
Ms. Vu Thi Sen – Head of Peasants’ Association and Vice Chairwoman of Village Women’s Union who is close to Ms. Van said: She is over 60 year old with bad health condition so farming works is too much for her. Collecting rubbish is considered as the way to make money. Sympathizing with her situation, we often give food and invite daily meals. People also visit whenever she feel ill or leave home unexpectedly.
After verifying circumstance of the beneficiaries, the survey team conducted a house quality assessment. At present, the house of Ms. Van has deteriorated after many years of use with large cracks on the wall. The auxiliary works such as kitchen, toilet or bathroom have been moldy and damp. The old wooden doors are out of order as well.
The representative of the sponsor of VNRA – the Chairman Vo Quang Diem affirmed that according to the introduction of Vietnamese Heart Fund, we went to Y Yen district, Nam Dinh province to directly evaluate the circumstance of Ms. Van and discuss with local authorities. Fortunately, the sharing of local officials help us deeply understand about her difficulties. As planned, we will rebuild a house of 40 – 50 sqm with a maximum budget of 150 VND million. The roof will be covered with colored AC roof sheets while the walls are made of lightweight concrete fibre panels. The final construction solution will be offered after a discussion with building contractors. The ground-breaking ceremony is expected in July. It is around one month for completion and handover.
