According to Deputy Prime Minister, in August 2014, WHO and ILO sent a letter to suggest that Vietnam Gorvernment should plan a roadmap to control chrysotile after 2020. Right after that, Prime Minister has approved the master plan for the development of construction materials in Vietnam by 2020 and the guidelines for 2030. The master plan required to plan a roadmap to reduce the use of chrysotile in roofing material production.

Vietnam does not have natural sources of chrysotile, thus chrysotile has been imported from foreign countries with the total amount of 70.000 tons per year mostly for the roof sheet production. The majority of AC roof sheets is used in rural and mountainous area. However, the research of WHO and ILO showed that being exposure to chrysotile might cause cancer for users. Therefore, Prime Minister has deployed Ministry of Construction to research the possibility to shorten the roadmap to eliminate chrysotile in building material production by 2020. Ministry of Science and Technology was also appointed to research for substitute materials; whereas Ministry of Health would evaluate the imfacts of chrysotile on human health.

“According to the roadmap, chrysotile is allowed to use until 2030. For now, different ministries are considering methodologies to shorten this roapmap”. – Deputy Prime Minister emphasized.
