Nylon was one of the first of the polymer fibres to be tried in substitution for asbestos in fibre-cement products.

Impact resistance was greatly improved but the other mechanical properties were not Durability was excellent. The fibre-to-cement matrix bond was inadequate. Its relatively high cost compared with that of propylene prevented its use in fibre-cement However it may be used in gaskets, felts and diaphragms.

Perlon is a trade name which has been used for both nylons and polyurethanes.
Nylon fibres have the following properties

Tensile strength  400-900 MPa
Young’s modulus   5 GPa
Diameter 4-200 micrometers
