Environmental exposure to asbestos: Assessment of risks and health impacts

This study aimed to quantify the potential intradomiciliary exposure to asbestos in five Brazilian capital cities and possible effects on the respiratory system.

The environmental exposure to asbestos in houses that are covered with asbestos cement tiles in large urban centers is hitherto uncharacterized in Brazil. This study aimed to quantify the potential intradomiciliary exposure to asbestos in five Brazilian capital cities and possible effects on the respiratory system. Assessment of the subjects studied found no clinical, respiratory function or high resolution tomographic abnormalities that were attributable to environmental inhalation of asbestos fibers.
As for occupational assessment, a total of 2,075 asbestos mining workers were assessed, and 405 individuals were submitted to a longitudinal follow-up by high resolution computed tomography (HRCT). Results of the study involving workers and former workers of asbestos mining activities separated by chronological Groups reflecting different exposure conditions.
